Building a Culture of Care: Supporting Student Wellbeing in VET

Understanding Wellbeing in the VET Context

Student wellbeing is more than just mental health — it encompasses a learner’s emotional, social, and physical safety. In vocational education and training, where many learners juggle work, family, and study, wellbeing directly impacts engagement, attendance, and completion rates.

Common Barriers to Student Wellbeing

  • Financial pressures and time constraints

  • Bullying, harassment, or discrimination

  • Poor access to mental health support

  • Lack of connection to peers or trainers

Strategies to Strengthen Wellbeing

  1. Create safe and inclusive spaces: Implement the <child safety principles> (Applying Child Safety Principles in VET) to ensure every learner feels valued and protected.

  2. Build trust and routine: Consistent communication between trainers and students helps reduce anxiety and uncertainty.

  3. Offer flexible learning options: Recognise that many adult learners need adaptability around work and family.

  4. Embed wellbeing check-ins: Include wellbeing moments at the start or end of class to monitor stress levels and offer support.

Practical Example

At one RTO, weekly “Check-In Circles” allowed students to share one positive and one challenging experience. This small ritual built empathy, community, and belonging.

Takeaway

Supporting wellbeing isn’t just a student service — it’s a teaching strategy. Trainers who invest in student wellbeing see improved engagement and completion outcomes.
